LNG Container AT/B by

Massachusetts-based Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering says it’s been tapped by Houston’s Minyan Marine to design “the world’s first LNG-powered AT/B.” The ocean-going articulated tug/barge is to have a container capacity of 1,056 TEU.

The electric drive power unit, which would also be able to function as an independent ocean towing tug, would feature four dual fuel EMD DGB 12-710 engines, OT&BE says. The 12-cylinder EMD powerplants will drive TeraTorq variable speed permanent magnet generators by OT&BE affiliate EcoMarine Propulsion Systems.

“The barge will have a pair of 8-cylinder EMD gensets of the same design,” states the OT&BE announcement. EMD stands for Electro-Motive Diesel, a unit of Caterpillar. DGB is Caterpillar short-hand for Dynamic Gas Blending, the engine manufacturer’s tradename for its factory duel fuel technology.

Caterpillar pledged last year, at HHP Summit 2012 in Houston, to deliver natural gas options across its broad engine line (HHP Insight, September 17, 2012).
